VR Sideloading Risk Perceptions & Behaviors:
A qualitative study with VR Developers and Non-Developers
Our client wanted to explore knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors around sideloading and malware on VR headsets.
We helped them find the niche users and understand this complex subject area so that they could better develop security features for both Developers and Non-Developers.
Amplinate conducted in-depth interviews to uncover users’ experiences and perceptions of sideloading and gathered feedback on security concepts, messaging, and UX/UI.
Findings helped the Security team create trust with their users and ensure an efficient Developer experience.
Research Goals & Questions
The goals of the research were to understand:
Developer and user sideloading behaviors, attitudes, and risk perceptions
How users react to malware security concepts and how security interactions can be improved and create trust
Research Questions
Why and how do participants sideload apps? How does this differ among cohorts?
What role does Developer Mode play in sideloading workflows?
How do we create malware security features that create trust and protection without being overly intrusive?
How do malware security features influence perceptions of trust in the product?
Our Approach

N=12 participants representing three cohorts:
Professional Developers
Adult Users (Non-Developers, although some engage in hobbyist VR development)
Teen Users (Non-Developers, although some engage in hobbyist VR development)
Mix of age groups and security awareness/concern levels

60 min in-depth interviews
Exploratory questioning on sideloading behaviors and perceptions and needs
Exposure to various security concepts and prototypes to gather feedback and gauge understanding and value

Amplinate analyzed feedback and created a report that prioritized changes to security concepts based on new understanding of user needs and severity of pain points.
Impact
Provided actionable feedback on how to iterate on security concepts and sideloading security messaging.
Developed long-term strategic recommendations on how to better serve each cohort’s sideloading needs better.
